What's new with the AirPods 5

Apple released the AirPods 5 in September 2026. The biggest step: active noise cancellation is now standard in every model. According to Apple, they cancel out up to 50 percent more ambient noise than the AirPods 4 with ANC. The earbuds and case are also more resistant to water and dust, with IP57 instead of IP54. The open fit without tips and the compact case remained the same.

Two cases, one AirPods 5 case cover

The AirPods 5 are available in two versions, which have the same external dimensions: 46.2 by 50.1 by 21.2 millimeters.

• AirPods 5 with a case that you charge via USB-C.
• AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, which also charges on a Qi charger or an Apple Watch charger, and has a speaker for Find My.

Because the shape is the same, this cover fits both. If you have the Wireless Charging Case, you simply place it on the charger with the cover on.

Why a cover, if they are already IP57?

A water-resistant case is not yet a scratch-resistant case. The glossy white exterior of the AirPods 5 gets fine scratches from keys and coins in a bag or pants pocket by itself. An AirPods 5 cover made of Alcantara® catches that. It also gives you grip, so the small case does not slip out of your hand when you take it out of your pocket.

Care

Take the cover off the case every now and then and brush it with a soft, dry brush. Dab a stain with a slightly damp microfiber cloth, without rubbing, and then let the cover dry completely before sliding it back on. Better leave alcohol and disinfectant wipes alone.

Frequently asked questions about the AirPods 5 cover

Does this cover also fit the AirPods 4?

Yes. The cases of the AirPods 4 and AirPods 5 have the same dimensions, so the cover fits both generations. For the AirPods 4 we also have our own collection.

Does the cover fit the Wireless Charging Case of the AirPods 5?

Yes. The Wireless Charging Case has the same shape as the regular case. You charge it with the cover on on a Qi charger or an Apple Watch charger.

Can I charge the AirPods 5 via USB-C with the cover on?

Yes. The USB-C port at the bottom of the case remains free.

Can the cover get wet?

Better not. The AirPods 5 themselves are resistant to water according to IP57, but you keep Alcantara® at its best if it stays dry. If the cover did get wet, let it dry in the air away from the case.
